The letter - it finally came!
Congratulations! Your CMP application has been approved. You have successfully completed the first step towards becoming a Certified Meeting Professional and are now eligible to sit for the CMP examination.
The Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation is earned by individuals in the meeting planning profession who achieve a certain level of experience and knowledge. You cannot even apply to take the CMP exam until you have five or more years in the business (or a college degree in hospitality plus two years of work experience) and a bundle of continuing education credits. I applied and was accepted! This is no small feat, but the real test is, well, the test.
Between now and November I will become a student of my profession learning things about being an event planner that I will never actually need to know in real life but taking this exam will prove that if I did needed to know it, I would have that knowledge. And that I do know the things I should know to do my job well. Which means I not only need to be keenly aware of what I already do, but I need to learn every nuance of event planning I might ever be called upon to use. The exam is hard. It will take months to study and I plan to crush that exam.
What do I get when it’s all over? Three letters and a load of satisfaction. The capital C-M-P mean a great deal in this business because they prove you are at the top of your game in our industry. You’re dedicated to this profession and everyone knows your level of knowledge and experience is top notch.
Like the Oscars it is an honor just to be nominated, or in the case of the CMP to simply be accepted through the application process. Today I celebrate clearing that hurdle as I look towards ordering a pile of books and start studying. Flashcards - here I come!
