What have you FOUND?

If you haven’t already heard of FOUND, here’s the scoop directly from brothers Davy and Peter Rothbart:

We collect found stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids’ homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, doodles– anything that gives a glimpse into someone else’s life. Anything goes.

We certainly didn’t invent the idea of found stuff being cool. Every time we visit our friends in other towns, someone’s always got some kind of unbelievable discovered note or photo on their fridge. We decided to make a bunch of projects so that everyone can check out all the strange, hilarious and heartbreaking things people have picked up and passed our way.

Years ago my mom gifted me with a few issues of Found Magazine which are collections of notes and photos from people all over the world submitted to Davey and Peter, who then compile them to share with the world. Later I randomly ended up getting a copy of Dirty Found in a holiday gift swap. Whenever these make it into the coffee table line-up guests are mesmerized and quick get lost in the pages of each issue. Let me put it this way: If you like Postsecret, you’ll love Found.

Each note, every photo - no matter how simple - is fascinating. When you don’t have any context for words or images the lucky person who finds the item can project whatever they want onto it. Back-stories are conjured up and explanations are devised. Grocery or To Do lists can be incredibly funny. Love notes, incredibly sweet. Sure, kids say the darnedest things, but they’re also so raw and honest. The truth which can come out in a note which you think nobody will ever read or the content of a photo never intended for the eyes of strangers is amazing.

The Found guys are heading out on a 10th anniversary tour so consider checking them out in person when they come to your city in 2012. And when you find a note on the street or a photo behind the fridge in your apartment from the previous residents send them to Found - because I really want to see them and so does the rest of the world.
